What is Love ???

what is love? Love true destiny

This was a really hard subject to write about. I tried looking for definitions of love on the Internet, in self-help books, poems, the dictionary, but I couldn’t find just one definition. I realized that there is no one definition for love.

Everyone has their own ideas and definitions about what love is and means to them. When I looked up “love” in the library, the page came up with a hole bunch of things such as attachment, first loves, friendship, intimacy, marriage, summer love, etc. The same thing happened when I looked on the Internet.

In these next few paragraphs, I will write about different people’s meanings and ideas on love. The definition of love in the Webster’s dictionary means many things. As you will see, it has a lot of ideas on what love is. “An intense affection for another person based on familial or personal ties.

A strong affection for or attachment to another person based on regard or shared experiences or interests. An expression of one’s affection: send him my love. An intense attraction to another person based largely on sexual desire. The deep affection, tenderness and concern felt for a person with whom one has or wishes to have a relationship based on sexual attraction. Sexual intercourse. A love affair. An intense emotional attachment, as for a pet or treasured object. A strong enthusiasm: a love of language. Eros or Cupid, the god of love in classical mythology. The feeling of benevolence, kindness, or brotherhood towards others.” As you can see there is not just one definition, there are many.

I used to have the fairy tale dream. One day prince charming would come riding up for me on his horse and we’d ride away to his castle where we would live happily ever after with our children, but through heartache and suffering I’ve realized that dream will never happen, nor will anything close to it. I don’t fully understand the word love and I don’t think I ever will. But who needs love? I’ve lived my life for fifteen years without it, why should I change that now?

I have my friends who keep me on solid ground. People need friends and we all need love for a completely fulfilling life, but who’s to say where the love needs to come from? You don’t need prince charming and his castle and riches to make you happy. You don’t need worldly fame to be content in your life. Just the thought of knowing that someone cares and understands you is enough to make everyday that we live feel great.
